Last week, Dr. Marlene Adrian, president of Women of Diversity received word from Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly that the organization she founded is to be recognized for its efforts on behalf of women in Nevada history.

The Women's Chamber of Commerce of Nevada is honoring Rose McKinney James with the 5th Annual Pioneer Award at it Annual Women's Hall of Fame event on Friday, March 30th. 2012 inductees for the 7th Annual event include: Gina Robinson-Billups, Kim Amato, Jan Jones, Mary Beth Hartleb, and Vicki Montgomery in the Leadership category. In the Young Professional Leadership category inductees are: Chandler Marrs, Patrice Ross and Tiffannie Bond.

On February 20, 2012 Myram Borders spoke at the Las Vegas Media Group luncheon, sharing stories about her years as a news correspondent for United Press International and as chief of the Las Vegas News Bureau. Myram moved to Las Vegas from Kentucky when she was just four years old. She is a Las Vegas High School alumni and you can read more about her and her many accomplishments at Las Vegas High School Alumni Association under Notable Alumni.
It was great to her Myram share some great stories of her “beat” years. . She reminded us all of the “good old” days when reporters had to “try and find a phone” in order to be the first to call in a great news story. Her career experiences are many and include some of the most important news stories documented in Las Vegas. The group had numerous questions for her and she generously answered all of them. An interesting fact is that Myram was instrumental in getting the Open Meeting Law passed in Nevada.

As a member of the Las Vegas Media Group, an organization comprised of men and women with a stake and/or an interest in Las Vegas history, I have met some pretty amazing people. I get pretty busy at the monthly meetings as I help coordinate speakers who share their stories to attendees and ensure all is running smoothly, so I rarely have a chance to get to know our members individually. When I do find out the personal histories of our members, I am fascinated and wish to know more about their life and career. Such is the case with Betty Bunch. Betty Bunch is a feisty redhead who just wrote a book about her life as a Las Vegas showgirl. "High Heels and Headdresses: Memoirs of a Vintage Vegas Showgirl" was recently published. 
I became aware at some point during our (LVMG) meetings that in a former life Betty was a showgirl, but I never got the chance to ask her about her experiences. I am thrilled I will be able to read all about Betty's life as a showgirl now that she's chronicled it in book form. I am sure after reading it I'll have lots of questions to ask her and for once I'm going to make the time to ask them the next time we share a table for lunch. There are so many people in Las Vegas that have great stories to tell, many of them women who until now, with the creation of the Nevada Women's Virtual Center and the efforts of Women of Diversity Productions, as well as the Nevada Women's Oral History Project at UNLV, have been woefully ignored. Betty will be has been signing copies of her book at several venues throughout the city. Be sure to catch her at one and thank her for sharing her history with us.
